3 Waters Main Renewals

This project covers trunk water main renewals in Woodville and Pahiatua, and sewer main renewals in Dannevirke. Water and sewer mains are a large-diameter pipeline that carries water or sewer to a distribution network. Essentially, these pipes are like a main artery for our water and sewer networks.

The reason for the replacement of these mains stems from several objectives:

  • Urban growth – The Tararua District Council Urban Design Strategy has identified significant new zones of urban development in Dannevirke, Woodville and Pahiatua. This means that work will need to be done to replace the existing water and sewer mains with a large size pipe to increase efficiency, due to a growing population.
  • Maintenance access – There are currently areas of the main pipe that cross private land and are away from access tracks, which create challenges for maintenance. Realignment of Council assets will allow immediate access to pipe work that originally traversed private property.
  • Infrastructure condition – The existing infrastructure is prone to failure. The replacement of this will allow Council to adequately detect and respond to future failures.

Surveying work

The first step in this work is investigations into the existing underground infrastructure and services. This includes identifying exactly where services like power, gas, and telecom are by using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR). Our contractor will also be surveying the location of these underground services with GPS and a drone to record their positions accurately.

This surveying work is planned to start at the end of April and will take about 3-4 weeks, but these investigations are weather-dependent. This work will disrupt traffic in the areas, and Traffic Management Plans (TMPs) will be in place. Please see the schedule of works for Dannevirke below, (Woodville and Pahiatua are to follow):

Dannevirke Sewer Mains – 28th April – 2nd May

Day 1:

  • McCallum Street

Day 2:

  • Miller Street

Day 3:

The first stage includes investigating existing underground services. This involves identifying the locations of utilities such as power, gas, and telecom using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), GPS, and drone surveys.

This work may cause some disruption to traffic in areas where work is being done. Traffic Management will be in place to help alleviate this. Please check out the schedule above to see where and when the work will be carried out (subject to change according to the weather).

The work will be carried out by Council-appointed contractors, who will be responsible for surveying and eventual construction.
