First Aid courses continues to build community resilience
23 May 2024
This week, first aid training has been provided in seven communities impacted by Cyclone Gabrielle. First aid training was a common request in community needs assessments conducted for the Community Emergency Hubs project late last year.
Initially, spaces were offered to members of each local Civil Defence Group or targeted at community members with volunteer roles or relevant skills who would be likely to be called upon during emergencies.
The response was hugely positive, with each course now at capacity.
Practical Training Solutions delivered the four-hour course, specifically tailored for rural residents. Designed to enhance rural community resilience, the course covered essential first aid techniques and incorporated practical, scenario-based training, such as responding to quad bike rollovers or incidents involving animals. It addressed unique challenges encountered in rural environments, such as working in isolation, limited access to emergency services, and remoteness.
The sessions kicked off in Weber and Kumeroa, followed by Pongaroa and Akitio the next day. Makuri and Alfredton were next in line, with the final session held at Te Uri. By the end of the course, over 80 people will have received this specialised training.
A huge thank you to The Ministry of Social Development and Tararua REAP who have ensured these courses are being delivered at no cost
