Tararua District Council Launches District-wide Contestable Fund
Applications open on Monday 13 January 2025
Tararua District Council is launching the District-Wide Contestable Fund this January, giving local groups and individuals the opportunity to bring their ideas to life and make a lasting impact in our communities. The Contestable Fund, amounting to $100,000 annually, will support requests that contribute to a connected and thriving district.
Mayor Tracey Collis discusses the motivation for establishing this fund:
“The decision to establish a contestable fund comes as a result of the Long Term Plan consultation process earlier this year. We asked our communities whether we should make changes to the way that we provide grants and sponsorships for local projects, events and services. We proposed the establishment of a District-Wide Contestable Fund – meaning everyone can apply to one fund, and decisions are made based on the merits of each application – ensuring fairness and transparency in the allocation of funds.”
"This contestable fund is an incredible opportunity to support the passion, creativity, and dedication of our people,” says Mayor Collis. "It’s about empowering individuals and groups to bring their ideas to life, celebrate our unique culture, and strengthen the Tararua District as a thriving, connected community."
The fund supports initiatives that align with the Council’s strategic priorities, focusing on areas such as:
- Thriving district
- Local culture and traditions
- Improving our environment
- Improving our infrastructure
- Enhanced community wellbeing
- Collaborative efforts
The Contestable Fund is open to not-for-profit groups, organisations, and individuals operating within the Tararua District. Whether you’re a local community group, sports club, cultural organisation, volunteer network, or an individual with a project that benefits the district, you’re encouraged to apply. This includes individuals seeking funding for international representation, provided their project meets the fund’s criteria.
Projects must demonstrate clear community benefits and meet the criteria outlined on our website. Detailed information about the fund - including eligibility requirements, application guidelines and FAQ - can be found at www.tararuadc.govt.nz/grants
If you have questions, email grants@tararuadc.govt.nz. Applications open in January, so start planning your application now. This might include thinking about how your project meets the funding priorities and developing a budget that details confirmed income and anticipated costs.
