December emergency works roading update

9 December 2024

The emergency works recovery team has been managing 14 worksites around the district, whilst planning for 7 high complexity sites coming up in January. On Weber Road at near the 16km mark, emergency works have been extended 275 meters towards Dannevirke to connect with an existing road rehabilitation area. This involves removing roadside trees, extensive drainage improvements, stabilisation and widening the road shoulder. This work is expected to be finished by mid-February.

Resilience work on River Road Ākitio at Cadmus Bridge was finished slightly ahead of schedule. A section of River Road was closed overnight for several weeks to enable large machinery to access the site. Work involved installing abutment sheet piling and concrete formwork to create capping beams between the bridge, and a cantilevered bridge deck. This will help retain fill material at the abutments during future floods, ensuring continued access for the Ākitio community and nearby farms. Thank you to the Ākitio community for your patience with this resilience work.

The Pahiatua-Pongaroa Road retreat is progressing well and has received positive feedback from key stakeholders on how this has been delivered and the environmental considerations put in place. The Rakaiatai Road bridge replacement over the Manawatū River is underway and also making good progress.

Road work sites will shut down from 20 December 2024 to 6 January 2025. A skeleton crew will be on-hand over this period to monitor sites and respond to any issues. To report any roading issues, please call Tararua District Council on 06 374 4080.
