Council Services Over the Holiday Season

Message from the Mayor

Tēnā koutou katoa
Greetings to you all,

NZTA - Waka Kotahi blind-sided our district in September with a short-notice announcement of a proposed toll on the new Te Ahu a Turanga: Manawatū-Tararua Highway project and a swift consultation period.

Council, and the district, mobilised very quickly, and the Toll Free Tararua campaign was born, making its voice heard loud and clear, particularly in Woodville. It was inspiring to see so many organisations and individuals come together for a common cause.

Many of you submitted to NZTA, and Council delivered a lengthy and highly detailed submission outlining our firm opposition to the toll proposal. We now await the recommendation of the Minister of Transport and the decision of Cabinet.

There has been so much happening throughout the world; the war in Ukraine drags on, but we are reminded that 80 years ago, our district, and Pahiatua specifically, welcomed 733 Polish refugee children exiled from Poland by the Soviet Union. The commemoration events held in Pahiatua in early November were special to the surviving children, now in their 90s, the people of Pahiatua, and the relationship between Poland and New Zealand.

I would like to say thank you to all who worked so hard to deliver a fitting commemoration. Today, Pahiatua’s twin town of Kazimierz Dolny in Poland continues to provide sanctuary and hope to Ukrainian children fleeing the war with Russia.

Please stay safe over the Christmas holidays and enjoy your well-earned time with family, friends, and whānau.
I wish you all a Happy New Year.

Noho ora mai,
Tracey Collis
