Old unused vehicles shouldn’t be dumped on the roadside
Published 28 Aug 2023
Last financial year (1 July ‘22 - 30 June 23) Council towed away 71 abandoned cars all over the district.
With tow costs averaging $350 a vehicle, that cost $24,000 (excluding staff costs).
Old vehicles can be recycled through scrap metal dealers. Some dealers will even collect them.
Let’s stop this sort of behaviour together
- Vandalised public facilities or car/rubbish dumping can be reported to Council by calling our friendly customer
services team. (24 hours - 7 days a week). - You can also send a Facebook message to facebook.com/tararuadc or email to info@tararuadc.govt.nz.
- The Antenno reporting app is also an effective way to pass on the information to us.
If you observe any of this taking place, please call the Police immediately on 111. Details such as car registrations, descriptions of individuals and photographs (always take care of your personal safety first) are valuable evidence that can be used to trace and prosecute/fine offenders. - Abandoned vehicles on state highways are the responsibility of the Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency
