Top tips for exploring the Tararua District during the holidays

From hidden corners and secret beauty spots, there are so many unique experiences on offer in our district, it’s hard to know
where to start. Hopefully these tips will add to the holiday fun, get you into the festive spirit and perhaps burn off a few of those
Christmas calories.

WAIHI FALLS

The majestic and spectular Waihi Falls is one of Tararua’s iconic locations. The falls have always been a Tararua must do, but with the new walkway it’s even better. The new vantage points along the track provide spectacular views of the falls spilling 25m over hard rock. Arrive early with your camera as the falls photograph well in the morning sun.

MANGATORO SCENIC RESERVE

This reserve is located on Ngapaeruru Road, 15km east of Dannevirke. You’ll find bush walks and swimming holes here. Look out for the giant Tōtara, said to be one of the largest in New Zealand. This is a nice walk through an impressive stand of native trees.

CAPE TURNAGAIN

Absolutely beautiful walk along the sweeping Herbertville beach to Cape Turnagain. The large headland juts out into the sea and is about a 45-minute walk north from the town. Its a breeding ground for seals so please be mindful and keep your dog on a leash.

TE ĀPITI – MANAWATŪ GORGE

Don’t you sometimes miss going through the Gorge? It’s one of our country’s iconic playgrounds and its right here on our doorstep. Enjoy its dramatic views, unique landscape and ancient bush along the many walking and mountain bike tracks. After exploring, perhaps take a refreshing dip at Te Waha o Te Kurī, the Woodville Ferry Reserve?

AWAPIKOPIKO RESERVE

A great place to combine a picknick with a short walk. It has occasional tall Kahikatea and other native trees. The track goes past a tall Rata and a large, very old, Hinau tree. The 28 hectares of bush was gifted by the Druce family and is 2km up Druce Rd, off Kumeroa Rd.

WINDFARM RIDE

The Windfarm Ride affords you the rare opportunity to see both the wonders of nature and the marvels of modern engineering. To glimpse the mighty wind turbines is an experience in itself, but to glimpse it on the back of a bicycle is one that you’ll never forget.
